Cara

“Don’t worry, Tiger. It will be fine.”

Wait, what?

Had Gram just…

I could feel Grace looking at me, but I avoided her eyes. Because I knew exactly what she was thinking. Fated mates. Gram knew.

She always knew.

No, that couldn’t be what had just happened. I’d known Gram for years, and she’d always called me Cara. She was just referring to my red hair. Or it was because of the baby. That made sense. She’d finally resigned herself to the reality that she was stuck with me since I was going to be the mother of one of her great-grandchildren. So she’d relented and made up an animal name for me. Maybe she’d even heard Logan call me Tiger and decided to just borrow his nickname for me.

It couldn’t be because…

Logan was in the room. I could feel his presence behind me. He was looking for something in the fridge, so had he heard her? What was he doing over there? Probably contemplating whether he could sneak a beer, even though he’d promised to give up alcohol with me while I was pregnant.

He probably hadn’t heard.

Why was I freaking out about this?

Fiona was saying something, but I’d lost track of the conversation. My eyes were glued to the table, my usual cool aloofness on the verge of crumbling.

And something happened inside me.

In my belly, to be precise. Until this moment, I’d felt like I was harboring a slowly expanding balloon, not a baby with arms and legs who could move, kick, or poke me.

I laid my hand just below my belly button. There it was again. It felt like bubbles swirling around and popping inside me. Was that the baby? It had to be.

Not quite sure what I was going to say, I looked up and opened my mouth. But before I could get a word out, Grace’s eyes went wide. Gasping, she put her hand on her belly.

“Oh wow,” Grace said on an exhale. “I’m having a really big contraction.”

A powerful mix of excitement and concern poured through me. Oh my god, was it time? I grabbed her hand. “Is it still going?”

She nodded and I waited while the seconds ticked by. Her forehead tightened and she started to breathe harder. After what felt like an eternity, but had probably been about a minute, she took a slower breath and her grip on my hand relaxed.

“It stopped. But that was so much stronger than they’ve been.”

“Than they’ve been when? Today? How long have you been having contractions?” I asked.

“Since about noon.”

My eyes widened. “Grace, that’s almost seven hours. Have they been regular? How far apart?”

“Pretty regular,” she said. “And getting stronger. The last few were about six minutes apart.”

“You’ve been sitting here in labor and you didn’t say anything?” I gaped at her in disbelief.

“I’ve been having little ones for the last couple of weeks. I didn’t want to get everyone excited over—oh.” She hissed in another breath. “Yep. There’s another one.”

“Looks like baby bear is coming sooner rather than later,” Gram said, her voice pure serenity.
